Amberina, in the old gold mining hills of Devala, is a great escape 72 kms from Ooty, 16 from Gudalur and still in the Nilgiri Biosphere. It is accessible by road through the Mudumalai forests.
Devala is a little town surrounded by acres and acres of tea gardens and forests. In 1895, an Englishman had described this region as a fever-stricken jungle, and those who planted tea in the area as enthusiastic lunatics.
A tea planter's bungalow, Amberina is now a haven for those seeking the bliss of solitude. There are three bedrooms, a cottage, a verandah running the length of the house, a spacious living and dining area with a high ceiling and a fireplace, old fashioned red tile floors and big glass windows framing some spectacular scenery. A stone bench sits on the green grass. A cuppa tea, a favourite book and you are in business.
